Slightly disappointing news for gaming fans expecting to enjoy the PlayStation Vita this year: Sony has said Japan is the only market that will receive the new portable console before the close of 2011.
More pointedly, Sony Computer Entertainment deputy president Kazuo Hirai has told Bloomberg that European and North American consumers won’t have direct access to the Vita until some time next year.
Hirai’s announcement quashes a recent rumour surrounding a supposedly leaked Blockbuster promotional flier that revealed Sony’s successor to the PlayStation Portable (PSP) would arrive in October.
When it does hit retail stores outside of Sony’s home market, the touch-screen PlayStation Vita will cost $249 USD with Wi-Fi connectivity, and $299 USD for the 3G version.
Staying with the console’s pricing, Hirai also said Sony has no plans to adjust the Vita’s cost in response to recent sweeping reductions announced by market rival Nintendo for its 3DS portable platform.
