Sony: We've already shifted 1.2 million PS Vitas

Despite feeling the austerity pinch, it would appear gamers still have access to enough disposable income to willingly splash out on a brand new slab of cutting-edge hardware.

Case in point, the powerhouse PlayStation Vita console (PS Vita) has sold some 1.2 million units since launching in Japan on December 17 of 2011, according to a self-congratulatory Sony.

Sony’s global figure comes just a week after the portable device hit retail outlets in the United States and across Europe—where it has already amassed in excess of 500,000 unit sales.

“PS Vita was designed to deliver the ultimate portable entertainment experience, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the reaction we’re seeing from consumers and the pace at which the PS Vita is selling,” enthused SCE Group president Andrew House in an MCV report.

Although the PlayStation Vita looks not dissimilar to the original PlayStation Portable (PSP), it differs insofar as it includes a 5.0-inch OLED touchscreen, a rear-facing touch pad, dual analogue thumb sticks, 3G connectivity, and quad-core processing.

Looking beyond the hardware’s clear consumer traction, Sony has also said some two million PS Vita software titles have been sold since launch and that around 70 new titles are coming down the development pipe.

While sales appear strong, and Sony claims to be happy with momentum, interest in the PS Vita will need to increase substantially if the Japanese titan hopes to surpass the 6.7 million unit sales attributed to the Nintendo 3DS during the console’s first eight months of availability.

Nintendo has shipped more than 15 million units of the 3DS since it launched in February of 2011.
