Having to endure an agonizing wait for tantalizing electronic devices that have long-since launched in Japan is par for the course these days.
So it’ll arrive as no great surprise for videogames fans outside of Sony’s home market to learn that the PlayStation Vita won’t be available until February of 2012.
Speaking at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, Sony boss Jack Tretton has this week confirmed that the Vita—the official successor to the PlayStation Portable—will be launched across Canada, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and the United States on February 22.
The Sony executive also revealed that gamers will be expected to find $249.99 USD for the basic Wi-Fi version of the portable gaming and multimedia console, while the Wi-Fi and 3G model will retail at $299.99 USD.
Prospective buyers in Europe will, as per usual, have to stump up more than their U.S. cousins, thanks to prices of 249.99 Euro and 299.99 Euro, which equate to respective dollar prices of $345 USD and $415 USD. Ouch.
When the Vita does finally arrive, it will pack quite a punch thanks to spacious 5.0-inch OLED touch-screen display, a rear touch-enabled gameplay panel, dual analogue sticks, dual cameras, and muscular quad-core processing.
The PlayStation Vita will launch in Japan on December 17.
