It’s longstanding VAIO computer line might have recently suffered a blemish to its track record after Sony recalled some 440,000 units in relation to potential overheating problems, but that hasn’t stopped the Japanese consumer electronics giant from unveiling its new -- and rather sexy -- VAIO TT line.

Lauded as the world’s very first lightweight, Blu-ray-enabled notebook when it was officially revealed earlier this week, the VAIO TT offers solid portability thanks to weighing in at just 1.3kg (2.87 pounds), measuring just under an inch in thickness, and continuing the VAIO line’s overall ethos of exuding plenty of aesthetic appeal.

“This engineering marvel packs the power of HD technology into an ultra-light, ultra-portable notebook,” enthused Mike Abary, senior vice president of VAIO product marketing at Sony Electronics.

Beyond offering consumers the choice of an integrated Blu-ray player, the TT will be powered by Intel Corporation’s Centrino 2 processing technology, while delivering up to 256GBs of (dual channel) solid state drive (SSD) data storage, a widescreen 11.1-inch XBRITE DuraView LCD display (1280 x 768), and the performance of Sprint EV-DO mobile broadband.

Other features include choices of Windows Vista Home Premium, Vista Business, or Vista Ultimate (and Windows XP Professional on select models), an onboard Web camera, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi (802.11n) connectivity, a duo of USB 2.0 ports, and HDMI support that outputs at 1080p resolution.

Available in colour choices of Crimson Red (pictured), Premium Carbon Black, Silk Black, and Champagne Gold, the new VAIO TT will arrive at retail before the end of the year sporting a starting price of $2,000 USD. Blu-ray-equipped models will start at $2,700 USD and the base 128GB SSD version will cost $2,750 USD.
