In a move that clearly shows modern videogames have become mainstream media and an intrinsic part of popular culture, Sony Computer Entertainment has this week announced it intends to unveil its newest exclusive PlayStation 3 game in various U.S. movie theatres.

More pointedly, the consumer electronics titan has said it will provide movie goers with the opportunity to interact with some big-screen footage from upcoming release Uncharted 2: Among Thieves in theatres in San Francisco and Thousand Oaks in California, Rosemont in Illinois, and Bellevue in Washington.

The eagerly awaited third-person adventure sequel, which hits retail on October 13, will be showcased before the public in theatres equipped with PlayStation 3 consoles hooked up to Sony digital-projection technology this coming October 06. A private invitation-only showing of the game will take place in the same theatres on October 05.

“We think it’s a start of something for us, and we hope we can build this into a standard element in the movie-going experience,” enthused Mike Fidler, senior vice president of Sony’s Electronics Digital Cinema Solutions and Services Group regarding the bold gameplay preview demonstration.

“Our goal in converting theaters to digital is to go beyond the traditional movie-going experience and focus on helping exhibitors find ways to fill seats,” he added in a Reuters report. “Gaming will be an important part of that equation.”
