Top-line tablets are too expensive, you say. They’re touch-screen gimmicks that lack genuine productivity, you chide. A laptop alternative offers so much more, you insist.
Well, bearing those points in mind, Japanese electronics giant Sony has this week announced a significant price reduction for its recently launched Tablet S computer.
The price drop in question, which has been made available via Sony’s official online store, brings the 16GB and 32GB models down by $100 USD each—to $399 USD and $499 USD respectively.
Tech site Digital Trends notes that a Tablet S price drop is also in effect at Newegg.com. Specifically, a $449 USD promotional bundle including a 16GB Tablet S and 1TB GoFlex HDD is now selling for $399 USD.
For those not familiar with Sony’s virgin foray into the tablet market (it’s dual-screen Tablet P has not yet been unleashed), the gently wedged Tablet S comes with a 9.4-inch display (1280x800), NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 processor and 1GB of RAM.
Other fixtures and fittings include the Honeycomb variant of Google Android, a rear-facing 5.0 mega-pixel camera, a front-facing 0.3 mega-pixel camera for video chats, and up to eight hours of battery life.
Oh, and if Sony’s price drop isn’t enough to sway your pocket, Research In Motion’s BlackBerry Playbook has been selling for as little as $199 USD—which is $300 USD below its original price. And Amazon’s popular Kindle Fire is only $199 USD. There, that’s your pricing gripe duly taken care of.
Now, if you’re looking for laptop-esque productivity in tablet form, let us take this opportunity to direct you towards ASUSTeK’s award-winning line of Eee Pad Transformer devices ($400 USD for the base Wi-Fi model with 16GBs of storage).
