Continuing in its efforts to clear a path for the arrival of the Next Generation Portable (NGP), Sony Japan has today announced that it’s pulling the plug on the unpopular PSPgo less than two years after the UMD-less gaming device hit retail.
Speaking with AV Watch, the electronics giant has confirmed recent rumors regarding the console, saying that existing shelf stock will not be replenished and hardware manufacturing for the device has now officially ceased.
However, a spokesperson for the company said the stalwart PSP-3000 portable console “will continue to be sold, and we will keep focusing our attention on it from here on out.”
News of the unpopular PSPgo’s untimely, but not at all surprising, demise comes hot on the heels of Sony’s recent decision to slash PlayStation Portable prices across Europe.
The cuts, which were not implemented in the UK due to the strength of the pound, saw almost 30 percent lopped off the console’s 179.99 Euro price tag, bringing it down to a more tempting 129.99 Euro.
A similar $129.99 USD price adjustment was brought into effect in the U.S. during the month of February.
