Sony preparing to unleash Uncharted 2 hardware bundle?

Yesterday, when we reported on the unveiling of a limited edition Modern Warfare 2 version of the Microsoft Xbox 360, we wondered why a Sony PlayStation 3 edition hadn’t been similarly announced for the cross-platform game.

Well, while Sony Computer Entertainment might have a Modern Warfare 2 console hiding in the shadows, the current lack of spotlight could be because it doesn’t want to deflect focus from its flagship exclusive Uncharted 2: Amongst Thieves.

Bearing that in mind, feast your eyes on the above hardware bundle, which, if the folks at Engadget are to be believed, offers up Sony’s recently released PlayStation 3 (PS3) Slim console alongside Naughty Dog’s eagerly anticipated action adventure sequel.

While the pictured Uncharted 2 bundle appears to lack the custom detailing attributed to the Modern Warfare 2 offering, gathering rumours suggest it at least matches the limited edition Xbox 360 insofar as it carries an expanded, multimedia-friendly 250GB hard disk drive.

“We’ve been able to independently confirm it’s legit,” said Engadget’s Ross Miller regarding the bundle, “but beyond that we’ve no clue when it’ll be announced or any price / release date information.”

So when can we expect Sony to whip the covers off the Uncharted 2 bundle? Given that the Tokyo Game Show (TGS) is looming large on the gaming event horizon, we won’t be surprised if Sony bigwig Kaz Hirai reveals the bundle during his keynote next week.

That being said, Sony Computer Entertainment America has been quick to dismiss the bundle’s credibility in the North American market, but hasn’t said that includes other major markets such as Europe and Japan.

And, to be fair, it’s hard to believe anything Sony says these days following months of stringent denials regarding the PS3 Slim and a sweeping hardware price cut – both of which were revealed at GamesCom in August.
