In a bit of positive Sony related news, the entertainment giant announced plans on Sunday to port PSP titles over to the PS3 platform.

Considering all the negative attention Sony has had in the press recently, the PSP Remaster series is certain to make some gamers grin in anticipation. The selected PSP titles used for the Remaster program will be customized and developed specifically for the PS3 computer entertainment system, Sony said.

So this will not be a simple task of emulation. Each new title will ship as a Blue ray Disc, but the downside for many of us is that the program will initially launch in the Japanese market.

“PSP Remaster titles will deliver rich and immersive gaming experience on the PS3 system through stunning high-definition graphics as well as through additional new features for these titles, such as operability on the PS3 Wireless Controller, and new add-on content or stereoscopic 3D support,” a Sony statement explained.

In addition, save data from the original PSP version of the new Remaster titles will carry over to the PS3. This, Sony said, will allow gamers to “enjoy the game on the go with the PSP system and continue the game at home on a large TV screen using PS3.”

Ad Hoc mode gameplay will also be supported through the "[Ad Hoc] party for PlayStation Portable" application on the PS3. But there are some limitations. According to Sony, not all of the new titles will support this mode of play. This is due to various things like network status, and lack of Wi-Fi support.

When it comes to porting the games, Sony warned that the types of content supported between the two platforms will depend on the titles themselves. In addition, there is no clear indication as to what titles will be ported and when.

Likewise, Sony did not indicate when they would launch the Remaster program in other areas, such as Europe, the U.S., and U.K.

The first game to be ported will be Japan’s “Monster Hunter Portable 3RD” from Capcom.

“The graphics of the PS3 version, including monsters, fields, equipment, as well as Felyne Comrades, are more gorgeous and vibrant than ever, and will deliver dynamic gameplay when played on the large TV screens,” Sony said.

E3 is just around the corner. You can be sure Sony will have more details on this soon. If you want to see the press announcement, it’s here.

Update:

It looks like Capcom sent Kotaku some gameplay footage. Their video from YouTube is embedded below.
