For some mobile gamers, the Nintendo DS and Sony PlayStation Portable are not enough to sate that craving for interactive entertainment. Bearing that in mind, Texas-based start-up outfit Spawn Labs has debuted the Spawn Player, which enables gamers to enjoy on-the-go action by using a computer to access their home videogame console.
Compatible with major home-based videogame hardware such as the PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360, the Spawn Player HD-720 from Spawn Labs is expected to retail for around $199 USD and provides remote access to whichever game disc the user has within their home console.
Working much in the same way as the existing SlingBox remote TV delivery system, the mobile network connection created between the HD-720 box and the downloadable Spawn Player application promises to provide users with real-time 720p high-definition gaming at 30fps and can support two console connections at any one time.
Spawn Box usage is open to anyone with access to a high-speed broadband Internet connection and, not just offering a single-player experience, the system’s accompanying interface also enables users to grant console access to friends who are similarly connected to the Spawn Player network.
According to Spawn Labs chief executive David Wilson, the technology will probably require two or three years before it’s completely ready for mainstream integration – which is a delivery delay that likely provides the company with a big enough cushion to conquer any latency problems while broadband Net connections continue to grow even faster.
