Having lauded the 4G capabilities of its Overdrive mobile hotspot late last week, telecommunications giant Sprint has used the CTIA Wireless trade show in Las Vegas to unveil the new HTC Evo 4G handset, which the company describes as “the country’s 4G smartphone.”

The HTC Evo 4G (which previously carried the codename ‘Supersonic’) will come complete with a spacious 4.3-inch capacitive display (480 x 800), which Sprint has been keen to note is perfect for video viewing and Web browsing – not to mention 30 percent bigger than the iPhone’s screen.

Powered by Google’s increasingly popular Android mobile operating system (v2.1) and a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, the Evo 4G also offers a solid 8.0 mega-pixel camera for still images and video capture (720p), a second front-mounted 1.3 mega-pixel camera for video calls, and the Sense multi-touch user interface.

Other contributing features and functions crammed into the Evo 4G include 1GB of flash memory, storage expansion up to 32GBs via microSD, Wi-Fi (b/g) and Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity, quick access to social networks and content-sharing services such as Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and YouTube, and support for Adobe Flash (a leading Web platform not yet available on the iPhone).

According to Sprint, the HTC Evo 4G will run on its Clearwire-operated WiMAX network (along with CDMA compatibility) and is destined to hit the market during the summer.

Handset and data plan prices have not yet been divulged.
