Despite the recent wave of market research love directed towards the dominance of Google Android on smartphone devices, not everyone is convinced that the open-source operating system has the legs to keep Apple's iPhone at bay.

Moreover, a survey carried out by industry analysts at Piper Jaffray has discovered that around half of all Android and BlackBerry users are planning to make the switch to Apple's iconic smartphone handset in the near future.

Taking a closer look at the poll results, 42 percent of existing Android users said they will likely transition to the iPhone, while 67 percent of BlackBerry users said they too plan to embrace Apple's smartphone device.

According to overall survey figures, 64 percent of those polled said they are looking to buy an iPhone, with 36 percent of that number currently holding off on committing to a purchase in order to await the much-touted arrival of the iPhone 5.

Although the survey's results certainly suggest that the days are numbered for Google's market-leading software platform, it's perhaps worth noting that Piper Jaffray only polled a mere 216 mobile users.
