While Microsoft has confirmed its Windows 7 operating system is being built on the foundations laid by the much-maligned Windows Vista, chances are the software giant is hoping positive early feedback will help the new platform find traction in the enterprise sector – which continues to resist the advances of Vista.
However, given the sustained vitriol directed towards Vista by businesses, a new survey investigating Windows 7's chances of adoption has revealed that any hopes Microsoft might have are a tad optimistic at this stage.
More pointedly, a survey offered up by ScriptLogic Corp. and covering more than 1,000 companies has revealed that around 60 percent of businesses presently have little interest in embracing Windows 7 when it arrives this coming October.
In terms of feedback garnered by the survey, while 60 percent of the respondents said they would not be deploying Windows 7 across their networks at launch, a promising 34 percent said they would make the jump by the end of 2010.
Unfortunately for Microsoft, only a mere 5.4 percent of businesses said they would be attaching themselves to Windows 7 before the close of 2009.
Reasons given by those polled for withholding their support include a lack of time and resources, economy-driven streamlined networks with less reliance on software updates, and compatibility fears held over from negative experiences with Vista.
Some 42 percent of survey respondents cited lack of time and resource concerns as their main reason for avoiding Windows 7, while a further 39 percent placed their standpoint of unwillingness on compatibility issues.
It’s not all bad news for Redmond-based Microsoft, however, with many businesses seemingly curious about Windows 7 thanks to the positive buzz accompanying its development, but suggesting they will steer clear at least until Microsoft stabilises the platform through its first official service pack (SP1) release.
