Earlier, we reported that Sprint and AT&T were working with McAfee and Juniper to add additional security to mobile devices. Today, Symantec is joining the fold, offering a trimmed down version of their Norton Mobile Security application.

With more than six billion applications downloaded to date, it’s clear that the Android Market is experiencing explosive growth and that consumers are hooked on downloading what they want, when they want it. Still, this demand can come with an expensive additional cost.

According to Symantec, researchers identified nearly four times as many unique-to-Android pieces of Malware in 2011, than the previous year. With that in mind, Symantec created Norton Mobile Security Lite. It’s a free security suite for Android, offering anti-Malware protection, as well as basic anti-Theft protection.

Users can remotely lock their device via SMS, should it be lost or stolen, while the anti-Malware protection scans stored files and application updates for problems. Access to Live Update on this version is free as well.

For those wanting the ability to locate or remotely wipe a device, as well as additional protection from malicious websites, plus the ability to block text messages and calls, then the full version of Norton Mobile Security will cost $29.99 USD, for an annual subscription.

The new offering is available now on the Android Market, in English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish.
