Got money to burn in the local consumer electronics store but require a little assistance in selecting the latest – and more importantly greatest – gadgets vying for your cash? If so, allow the annual T3 technology awards to be your guide.

More pointedly, the ever-increasing popularity of the Google-backed Android mobile operating system (OS) has seen the HTC Hero handset bestowed with T3 magazine’s ‘Gadget Of The Year’ accolade during its recent awards ceremony.

That being said, despite securing phone of the year, the HTC Hero was unable to hold off the rival challenge of Cupertino-based Apple’s trend-setting iPhone, which was awarded both ‘Commuter Gadget Of The Year’ and ‘Gadget You Can’t Live Without’.

Beyond openly applauding two of the tech world’s leading handsets, the T3 awards also lauded Google-backed Android as ‘Launch Of The Year’, while online music streaming service Spotify took ‘Innovation Of The Year,’ and actor, comedian and technology enthusiast Stephen Fry picked up the award for ‘Gadget Personality Of The Year’.

Other notable awards handed over on the night saw Amazon surprising no one by scooping ‘Retailer Of The Year’, while the impressive BBC iPlayer HD catch-up service took ‘New Media Service Of The Year’, and the Lenovo IdeaPad S10E was named ‘Computer Of The Year’.
