Looking to bolster the retail traction of its existing TG01 smartphone, Japanese consumer electronics giant Toshiba has this week confirmed the arrival of a TG01 handset variant equipped with the Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system (OS).

In providing the (previously Windows 6.1) TG01 with full Windows 6.5 status, Toshiba offers that its timely OS upgrade complements the smartphone’s impressive hardware specifications and also provides users with access to Windows Marketplace for Mobile.

So, beyond the apparent appeal of Microsoft’s latest operating platform, the TG01 comes equipped with a generous 4.1-inch WVGA display screen (800 x 480) and is powered by the 1GHz Snapdragon processor in order to deliver “a premium multimedia experience” packed into a slender 9.9mm handset.

“Our new TG01 Windows phone is quite simply the next step in cutting edge mobile technology,” trumpeted Hidehito Koka, Deputy Managing Director of Toshiba UK’s Mobile Communications Division.

“Toshiba is constantly striving to deliver the very best mobile experience and we are excited [to see] what this new Windows phone update will bring our customers, with an improved user interface and access to a multitude of applications through Windows Marketplace,” Koka added.

Tempted? Other features and functions squeezed into the TG01 alongside Windows Mobile 6.5 include a solid 3.2 mega pixel camera with autofocus, 256MBs of RAM, microSD memory expansion up to 32GBs, Bluetooth 2.0, USB support, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi connectivity, and built-in A-GPS navigation.
