The multimedia functionality of Apple’s iconic iPhone marches on this week thanks to the introduction of the aptly titled TV.com, which has been offered up to portable television lovers courtesy of the kind folk at CBS Mobile.

Compatible with both the iPhone and iPod Touch handsets (via Wi-Fi or 3G network connectivity), the free-to-download and free-to-use TV.com application enables users to watch complete episodes of select CBS properties while on the move.

Although not openly delivering access to the entire CBS portfolio, TV.com provides popular content such as episodes of The Late Show with David Letterman, the original classic Star Trek, CSI: Miami, The Young and the Restless, MacGyver, along with programming from CBS News and CBS Sports.

Other shows of note available through the application and running on QuickTime include the likes of Smallville, 90210, The L Word, The Tudors and popular online podcasts from technology outlets CNET and GameSpot.

The first such direct content streaming service to be offered up in the United States by a major North American broadcaster, the structure of TV.com is similar to that of the BBC iPlayer application, which offers a catch-up service to iPhone and iPod Touch users in the UK.
