...so why not 'hit them up'? Image: Facebook.
With Twitter having already revealed 2010’s most popular Trending subjects, it now falls to Facebook to put forth the most popular words to have graced the world’s biggest social networking community over the last 12 months.
Leading the words in question, all of which have gained momentum via user status updates, is trendy teen initialism HMU—which stands for ‘hit me up’ and is FYI used by the younger set across Facebook instead of ‘contact me’.
Major international events also feature prominently on the list, with the 2010 FIFA ‘World Cup’ sitting in second place, while the flood in Haiti and the Chilean mining disaster figured at fifth and eighth respectively thanks to the traction of ‘Haiti’ and ‘Mineros/Miners’.
From a technology standpoint, Apple’s ‘iPad’ tablet computer and ‘iPhone’ handset proved popular with the Facebook masses with a fourth-placed finish, and ‘Games on Facebook’ secured seventh.
Here’s the Facebook list in full:
1. HMU
2. World Cup
3. Movies
4. iPad and iPhone
5. Haiti
6. Justin Bieber
7. Games on Facebook
8. Mineros and Miners
9. Airplanes
10. 2011
Earlier this week, Twitter announced that ‘Gulf Oil Spill’ had topped its 2010 list of most popular Trends, with ‘FIFA World Cup’ and Hollywood blockbuster ‘Inception’ rounding out the top three.
