Until tablet computer manufacturers add genuine productivity value to their snazzy and desirable touch-screen slabs, the simple truth remains that ye olde notebook is still the best piece of hardware for demanding on-the-go users.

So, bearing that in mind, meet the Toshiba Portege Z830 Ultrabook, which, while no match for the iPad’s trendy aesthetics and touch interfacing, appears to be a thoroughly decent computing platform that eclipses any current tablet alternative.

Unveiled by Toshiba during the IFA 2011 consumer electronics show in Berlin, the Ultrabook isn’t likely to worry the sector’s upper-tier offerings (MacBook or otherwise), but its reliance on Intel’s Core technology should help secure its solid market positioning.

Other technical aspects include a 13.3-inch display, a screen resolution of 1366x768, up to 6GBs of RAM, a 128GB solid state drive (SSD), Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, and support for VGA, HDMI, USB and Intel’s Wireless Display.

According to the Japanese giant, the magnesium alloy Ultrabook is also not only 20 percent lighter than the preceding Portege R830 notebook, but also some 40 percent more svelte where profile thickness is concerned.

“These new systems offer impressive portability, durability and essential features with truly smart styling,” outlined Toshiba regarding its latest Portege offering, which is expected to launch before the close of the fourth quarter.

Pricing and full regional availability has not yet been revealed.
