In a move to increase the security buffer connected to modern internal hard drive solutions, Japanese consumer technology giant Toshiba has today unveiled its upcoming line of self-encrypting HDDs.
The 2.5-inch drives, which come with AES 256 protection and Wipe Technology, should provide peace of mind for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and end-users thanks to their ability to instantly wipe stored data if an incorrect access password is submitted or if the hardware has been stolen.
Compatible for use within PCs, copiers, printers, POS systems and other IT devices, the Wipe Technology drives allow users “to determine a range of security settings, including invalidation of encryption keys and data invalidation when a drive is removed from its housing or connected to an unauthorized host system.”
Beyond the security-related credentials of Toshiba’s upcoming HDD devices, they will also offer storage ranging from 160GBs to 640GBs, along with support for Serial ATA, and an interface speed of 3.0Gbps.
They also provide users with a rotational speed of 7,200 RPMs, a buffer memory of 16MBs, and an average seek time of 12msec.
Samples of the new Toshiba hard drives (MKxx61GSYG) are being dispatched to OEMs throughout April, and are expected to enter full production before the close of June.
Toshiba has not yet revealed related price points.
