The hugely popular Nintendo Wii may be head and shoulders above the competition when it comes to global unit sales, but the motion-sensing home console has oft been criticised for failing to sustain consumer interest shortly after its initial retail purchase.

However, Japanese gaming titan Nintendo is looking to temper any shortfall in gamer commitment by launching an incentive-based promotional campaign designed to maintain interest while driving users towards the console’s online capabilities.

Starting in Europe this October, the newly announced ‘Connection Ambassador Promotion’ awards 500 redeemable Wii Points to any console owner that successfully introduces the wonders of Nintendo’s online gaming service to a friend or family member – who will also receive 500 Wii Points to help promote instant download interaction.

Much like a pyramid scheme, but one where the little man is actually rewarded, anyone that manages to introduce online gaming to 10 previously offline Wii owners will receive ‘gold’ ambassadorial status, which enables the free download of all first-party NES games on the Wii’s Virtual Console service.

And, if users are able to tempt 20 offline gamers to the online experience, their ambassadorial status will increase to ‘platinum’ and they will be awarded a whopping 10,000 Wii Points (approx: $100 USD) and given completely free download access to every single first and third-party NES, SNES and Nintendo 64 game on the Virtual Console.
