In 2007, IO Interactive offered the gaming world a hard-hitting slice of interactive crime and revenge in the form of Kane & Lynch: Dead Men. The game, which was clunky and deeply flawed, received something of a mauling from the majority of critics.
That being said, Danish developer IO – clearly not swayed by the weight of critical opinion – is intent on proving its violent (and vile) criminal duo are worthy of a second look.
With Square Enix-owned publisher Eidos Interactive once again in the mix, Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days has this week been confirmed for an August 24 release in North America and August 27 in Europe on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Games for Windows.
Described as “a raw and brutal crime shooter” following desperate ex-mercenary Kane and self-medicating psychopath Lynch through “48 hours of hell,” Dog Days doesn’t sound as though it will be much of a departure from the first game in terms of its mature themes, bloody content and body count.
According to IO, the sequel will include a new visual experience inspired by modern documentary filmmakers and the user-generated era. This will result in (spasmodic framing?) that will pull players into the game world as every move and shake of the camera captures and conveys the on-screen mayhem “in an unscripted style.”
“We believe the unique visuals and relentless gameplay has created an intensity never delivered in a videogame before,” commented Niels Jorgensen, general manager of Copenhagen-based IO.
“In a genre where so many games look and feel the same, Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days will make people double-take,” he added. “We think it’s going to make quite an impression.”
Other new features packed into Dog Days include all-new multiplayer modes built on encouraging “greed, betrayal and revenge” as players battle through Undercover Cop, Cops & Robbers and Arcade modes – alongside “the highly celebrated” Fragile Alliance mode.
