Goodbye Tweetie, hello Twitter. Image: stevegarfield/Flickr.
Having already arrived on BlackBerry and Android-powered smartphones, the official Twitter mobile application has finally achieved 'triple-threat' status after launching on Apple's iconic iPhone device.
The newly released app, which is compatible with both the iPhone and iPod Touch, allows users to search through Twitter's ever-growing mountain of tweets, locate nearby Twitter users, scan through the most popular tweets, and even peruse content suggested directly by the popular micro-blogging service.
In an attempt to draw more traffic and potential sign-ups, the Twitter app can also be downloaded by Apple handset owners regardless of whether they actually have a registered account, allowing those without to sample the service via a more passive approach.
The latest iteration of the Twitter app is essentially built on the back of Tweetie v3.0, a third-party Twitter application the company secured when it purchased technology start-up Atebits in early April of this year.
Not just bringing Twitter to Apple's mobile handsets, Twitter is also in the process of developing a similar app platform for the Cupertino-based gadget giant's iPad tablet computer.
The official Twitter app is available as a free download from the iTunes App Store.
