Spam, it’s the bane of inboxes everywhere. But if you’re looking to point the geographical finger of blame for those oft-malicious messages masquerading as bona fide email, in which direction should you point?

Well, according to a new proliferation report released by Internet security specialist Sophos, the good old US of A is the primary culprit when it comes to regurgitating Spam.

Moreover, the land of the free and the home of the brave accounted for 15.2 percent of all global Spam email during the second quarter of 2010, which is a marked increase from the 13.1 percent it registered during the year’s previous quarter.

The USA boasts a clear lead over its international rivals when it comes to Spam, with India following up in second with 7.7 percent and Brazil completing the top three with 5.5 percent.

The United Kingdom, which had previously dropped out of the worst offenders’ list, is on the rise with 4.6 percent for Q2.

Rounding out the top ten places on the Spam 'chart of shame' are South Korea (4.2 percent), France (4.1 percent), Germany (4.0 percent), Italy (3.5 percent), Russia (2.8 percent) and Vietnam (2.7 percent).
