Ubisoft: Prince of Persia movie to be bigger than Pirates

While the humungous blockbuster success of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies can’t be sniffed at, videogame publisher Ubisoft is confident the upcoming celluloid adaptation of its Prince of Persia property will be so big it will even outperform the debut entrant in the juggernaut series.

More pointedly, Ubisoft chairman Yves Guillemot has recently conveyed such unbridled optimism before a gathering of investors and industry executives during the BMO Capital Markets digital entertainment conference.

“[Prince of Persia] will show what a video game property can do in the (movie) industry,” outlined Guillemot, clear in his extreme confidence regarding the chances of the Jake Gylenhaal-fronted adaptation.

“What we hear is that it could maybe be stronger than Pirates, which did 2.7 billion dollars worldwide,” he added.

While Guillemot didn’t elaborate on exactly what Ubisoft ‘has heard’ regarding the box office potential of Prince of Persia, his confidence is likely rooted in the fact that powerhouse Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer is also attached to the Prince of Persia project.

With Bruckheimer helping push the movie, which is based on 2003 smash Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, there’s every chance the film will be a massive hit when it arrives in 2010 – despite recent Hollywood shortfalls when it comes to interpretations of videogame properties.
