Updated PlayStation 3 on the way?

Rumors were sparked recently when an internal memo from Best Buy was leaked online stating that the 80GB version of the PlayStation 3 would be discontinued. This news was confirmed when an insider at GameStop announced that they would no longer be receiving shipments of the 80GB model either.

This has caused much speculation as to whether the PlayStation 3 lineup would be limited to a 40GB model only or if it was to make room for an updated version. Analysts believe that a new version will be released sporting a higher capacity hard drive and possibly including the much-anticipated Dual Shock 3 controller. 

With some of the newer titles, such as "Devil May Cry 4", which requires 5GB of storage just to play, a 120GB-160GB hard drive may be just what the PlayStation 3 needs.

But with all good news comes a bit of bad news. In order to cut down production costs of the hardware, some are worried that Sony will be removing the backwards compatibility of PlayStation 2 titles from all future versions of the PlayStation 3. Customers are worried that a move like this could make much of their gaming library obsolete. 

Though Sony Computer Entertainment of America denies any rumors that a new version of the PlayStation 3 in the works, experts hope for some sort of insight during this year's Game Developers Conference which will take place in San Francisco, California in mid February.
