If you’re handy with a hammer, enjoy a spot of carpentry, and get a rise from rewiring a plug, chances are you don’t get excited when it comes to out-of-the-box PC hardware. If so, the boffins at Via Technologies have just what you need to stem those DIY cravings.
Taiwan-based Via has this week unveiled its new ARTiGO A1150 mini PC Kit, which enables DIY technology enthusiasts to sample the next-generation of ultra-compact desktop computing in a slightly unconventional way.
As such, while the “palm-sized” ARTiGO A1150 has physical measurements of just 14.6cm x 9.9 cm x 5.2 cm, it comes equipped with a dual-core Via Eden X2 processor (1.0GHz for 64bit), up to 4GBs of DDR3 RAM, support for Gigabit and Wi-Fi networking (b/g/n), and a total of five USB ports.
“Via redefines dual core low power compact computing, bringing all the features of a regular desktop PC into a form factor that needs to be seen to be believed,” trumpeted Epan Wu, head of Embedded Platforms at Via.
Other contributing aspect crammed into the little box include HD video support, HDMI and VGA display connectivity, and the all-in-one Via VX900H media system processing chipset—which boasts hardware acceleration for codecs such as H.264, VC-1 and MPEG-2/4.
Guaranteed to be a low-power space saver when compared to standard desktop systems, the ARTiGO A1150 mini PC comes attached to an asking price of just $265 USD.
