Formally announced during CTIA Wireless in Las Vegas, the mobile iteration of Skype is being introduced to nine Android 3G and BlackBerry 3G smartphones on the Verizon Wireless network, providing users with the ability to connect Skype-to-Skype calls with other Skype mobile handsets around the globe.
Of course, while the integration of Skype is a good thing, Verizon isn’t about to cut its own throat by fully embracing the free VoIP service. Moreover, customers interested in using the Skype mobile app will need a compatible smartphone and a data plan. Looks like the only way to save steady money here is if you need to frequently call long distance.
The list of Skype-ready Verizon handsets includes the BlackBerry Storm 9530, Storm2 9550, Curve 8330, Curve 8530, 8830 World Edition, and Tour 9630, along with the Motorola Droid, Droid Eris, and Motorola Devour.
“Skype mobile will deliver an unparalleled experience for Verizon Wireless customers,” trumpeted Russ Shaw, general manager of Mobile for Skype in a statement.
“It will be the best way to enjoy unlimited conversations with Skype contacts all over the world as no extra cost,” he added. “In addition, Skype mobile will allow people to easily and inexpensively make calls to landlines and mobile abroad at Skype rates.”
Interested? If so, the Skype application can be downloaded directly from the Android Market, while BlackBerry users will find it via the Downloads folder on their home screens. Verizon customers can also secure the app by texting ‘SKYPE’ to 2255 to receive its link.
