Video: Microsoft Courier is a 'digital journal'

With consumer and industry expectations firmly trained on the iPad after Apple officially confirmed April 03 as the tablet computer’s retail street date, it would appear Microsoft is eager for its rival Courier “digital journal” device to steal a little of the current limelight.

Citing “an extremely trusted source,” the gadget watchers over at technology blog Engadget have revealed the clamshell Courier will arrive with a profile of less than an inch, a weight of just over a pound and a closed physical sizing of just five inches by seven inches.

Although industry whispers have suggested the twin-screen Courier could be powered by the Windows 7 operating system, Engadget’s unnamed insider claims the device will run on the same Windows CE derivative behind the Zune HD and new Windows Mobile 7 handsets.

Other features and functions expected to arrive alongside the Courier include a focus on hosting eBooks, a touch-screen user interface supported by pen-based navigation and user input, an on-board digital camera, and also a 3.5mm headphone jack. 

Microsoft has not yet divulged concrete information regarding the Courier’s market arrival, although related rumours suggest the device will launch in the second half of 2010.
