In a bid to improve worldwide sales and alter the image of the Beetle motorcar, German giant Volkswagen has this week unveiled a newly redesigned version of the original “people’s car”.
Expected to appeal to a more widespread audience and help shake off the tag of being ‘a girl’s car’, the third-generation Beetle will arrive sporting six inches of extra length and 3.3 inches of extra width.
Clearly bigger yet significantly sleeker than its iconic predecessors, the new Beetle also promises to attract a more varied cross section of drivers thanks to the inclusion of a 2.5-liter, five-cylinder engine capable of churning out 170 bhp.
Volkswagen’s sleek new Beetle was thrust into the media spotlight on Monday during motor shows held in Berlin, New York and Shanghai. It should begin appearing in car showrooms and on forecourts across the U.S. from September.
