Good news for drivers of electric vehicles (EV) in the United States after heavyweight drugstore Walgreens announced plans to significantly increase its line of EV charging stations.

According to Walgreens, its existing charge station partnership with NRG Energy will expand to cover around 800 of its 7,733 stores before the close of 2011.

In terms of access, 50 new ‘Level 2’ and ‘Level 3’ stations are to be added, with the former providing 25 miles of charge boost within an hour, while the latter offers 30 miles of charge in a mere 10 minutes.

“Consumer interest and enthusiasm has been incredible and we’re excited to provide locations to charge up in neighborhoods across the country,” outlined Mark Wagner, president of community management and operations at Walgreens in a statement.

“According to the Department of Energy, Walgreens will make up as much as 40 percent of all public EV charging stations across the country, making it easy for EV drivers to look to our stores for a quick charge near major highways, metropolitan areas or right in their neighborhood,” he added.

New York will be the first destination to receive the benefit of new Walgreen EV charge stations, with Dallas-Fort Worth, Chicago and Houston set to follow soon thereafter.
