Having wowed critics and consumers alike with Batman: Arkham Asylum, videogame publisher Warner Bros. Interactive and comic book giant DC Entertainment have this week whipped the shadowy cape and cowl off eagerly anticipated sequel Batman: Arkham City.

While little is presently known about the game’s narrative core and gameplay additions, players can expect an action experience that builds upon the “intense, atmospheric foundation” of the original 2009 adventure, according to Warner Bros. Interactive.

For those who missed the award-winning Batman: Arkham Asylum, it centred on the iconic caped crusader during his quest to bring arch nemesis The Joker to justice while dishing out meaty knuckle sandwiches to the escaped inmates of Gotham’s notorious institute for the criminally insane.

With expansion clearly a motivating factor, the sequel will task players to brave Arkham City, the new maximum security “home” for all of Gotham City’s thugs, gangsters and criminal masterminds.

“Set inside the heavily fortified walls of a sprawling district in the heart of Gotham City, this highly anticipated sequel introduces a brand-new story that draws together a new all-star cast of classic characters and murderous villains from the Batman universe,” outlines the official press blurb.

Batman: Arkham City, which is being helmed by returning developer Rocksteady Studios, will be released in Q3 of 2011 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Games for Windows.

The original Batman: Arkham Asylum received numerous Game of the Year awards in 2009, notably from the likes of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), and also revered Zero Punctuation reviewer Ben ‘Yahtzee’ Croshaw.
