Western Digital unveils 1TB Scorpio Blue SATA drive

Data storage specialist Western Digital has this week unveiled its new one terabyte WD Scorpio Blue HDD for mobile storage applications and notebook computer hardware, which it is lauding as the industry's highest-capacity SATA 2.5-inch hard drive.
According to Western Digital, the new Scorpio Blue's 12.5 mm form factor makes it ideally suited for portable use within hardware solutions such as new My Passport Essential SE Portable USB Drives, certain notebook platforms, and even small form factor desktop PCs.
With a 750GB Scorpio Blue model also in the works, both drives offer high performance thanks to a transfer rate of 3 gigabits per second along with low-power consumption, trusted reliability, and low temperature operation.
Other contributing specifications include 5200 RPM, an 8MB cache, Western Digital's exclusive WhisperDrive to help produce one of the quietest 2.5-inch drives available, and ShockGuard technology to meet the highest tolerance specifications for mobile and notebook applications.
"The convergence of the growing mobile computing and digital media trends produces the man for desktop-like capacities in portable devices," said Jim Morris, senior vice president and general manager of client systems at Western Digital.
"Our new WD Scorpio Blue drives enable people to take even more of their digital collections with them wherever they go and, realizing the value of their data, back up their notebooks on there My Passport drives," he added.
The new Western Digital Scorpio blue terabyte drive is available now at a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $249.99 USD, while the 750GB model will cost $189.99 USD.
