The year continues to tick by, videogame conferences and press events come and go, analyst predictions flounder, Internet rumour remains unsubstantiated, and still Sony staunchly refuses to drop the price of its PlayStation 3 (PS3) videogames console.
Well, perhaps the expectations of prospective consumers need not wait for Sony to make a positive move in adding a touch more temptation to its powerhouse games and multimedia platform -- step forward Amazon.
Moreover, following on from yesterday’s news that Sony has managed to reduce the manufacturing cost of its PlayStation 3 by a whopping 70 percent, online retailer Amazon has moved to tap any resultant consumer frustration by hacking a solid $50 USD from its stock of PS3s.
The U.S. price drop directly affects the existing $499 USD value bundle, which includes a 160GB version of the console along with hit action game Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and a PSN download voucher for PAIN, reports UK trade publication GamesIndustry.biz.
And, in order to keep the rumour mill churning out speculation of an ‘official’ price drop from Sony, industry watchers, analysts, and videogame outlets are now suggesting that the upcoming Gamescom trade fair in Cologne, Germany, is where Sony will finally take a scythe to the PlayStation 3’s price.
Colour us cynical, but we here at The Tech Herald won’t be holding out for Sony to buckle – especially not after it recently announced PS3 unit sales of almost 24 million – and we confidently expect to be seeing the same old price drop rumours ahead of the Tokyo Games Show in September.
