As with any Windows operating system, it's generally wise to hold off on adoption until Microsoft has released the software platform's first official Service Pack (SP), which is essentially a huge patch of bug fixes, security enhancements and other specific tweaks designed to iron out persistent wrinkles.

At present, Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 doesn't have an official release date. However, if you can wait no longer to snap up Microsoft's latest operating system, or you're an early user with a distinct lack of patience, you can always grab SP1 from one of the torrent services it's been leaked to this week.

First spotted in the wild and put through its paces by GeekSmack, SP1 Build 7061 (or 6.1.7601.16537fre.win7.100327-0053) reportedly installs significantly faster than previous Service Packs released for Windows Vista and is also ready to go after just two system reboots. Not bad at all.

Although the leaked build may excite a few Windows 7 devotees and perhaps even the odd business enterprise looking to ditch either Vista or XP in favour of its roundly applauded successor, its actual substantial content – or lack thereof – is unlikely to prompt a torrent stampede.

More pointedly, Microsoft communications manager Brandon LeBlanc recently outlined what to expect in SP1 via the official Windows Team Blog, saying the pack will deliver “only minor updates” alongside an enhanced Remote Desktop client “that takes advantage of RemoteFX” which was introduced in the server-side with SP1 for Windows Server 2008 R2.
