The Xbox 360 may be seven years old but the latest batch of NPD sales figures suggest consumer interest in Microsoft’s stalwart home console is now stronger than ever.

More pointedly, NPD’s research has revealed that U.S. sales of the Xbox 360 hit an impressive 960,000 units during the week surrounding the Black Friday surge.

It’s perhaps worth noting that the aforementioned unit sales rank as the best ever console haul posted by Microsoft during the traditionally busy post-Thanksgiving period.

Although sales between Nov. 19 and Nov. 25 were undoubtedly driven by timely hardware price reductions and bundle deals, sales of the Xbox 360 were also supported by recently released software exclusives such as Gears of War 3 and Halo: Anniversary.

Meanwhile, Microsoft’s seemingly relentless Kinect advertising campaign saw the hands-free control peripheral shift some 750,000 units in the U.S. as the Xbox division continues to eat into the Nintendo-dominated casual market.
