iPhone SDK downloads on overdrive

It’s been a little over a week since Apple Inc. detailed the much talked about software development kit (SDK) for the iPhone and iPod touch, and the California-based computer company has today revealed that developer demand is definitely high for the SDK following more than 100,000 downloads.
To further compound the developmental desire of third-party application creators, Apple also points out that the 100,000 marker was surpassed in only four days after the SDK beta was officially launched on March 06.
The SDK package provides independent software designers with the same rich set of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) as those used by Apple’s own team of core developers working on the iPhone and iPod touch.
Lauding the SDK’s apparent traction, Philip Schiller, senior VP of Worldwide Product Marketing at Apple, also noted that the SDK’s popularity has been bolstered by more than one million people having already watched the launch video through Apple.com.
Apple also points out that leading developers including America Online, Electronic Arts, Epocrates, sales force.com and SEGA “have already demonstrated amazing applications using the SDK,” while developer response “continues to be phenomenal.”
Other business and videogame-related developers looking to embrace the iPhone via its SDK include NetSuite, Namco Networks, PopCap, Intuit, Rocket Mobile, Six Apart and THQ Wireless.
“Apple’s tools have provided our development team the flexibility to make the SuitePhone application richer and deeper,” said Luke Braud, vice president of Software Development at NetSuite. “NetSuite is excited at the opportunity to give every iPhone customer access to their critical business data anytime, anywhere.” .
The iPhone/iPod touch software development kit is available now as a free download and can be grabbed with both clammy hands by clicking here. The iPhone Developer Program is currently only available in the United States, although it is expected to expand to other countries in the coming weeks and months.
