The latest editions of Tesla Model S and Model X apparently contain enough computing hardware to be qualified as portable high-end gaming consoles on wheels. Elon Musk has evidently crammed in the latest AMD GPUs based on the Navi 23 RDNA 2 GPU.

The 2021 refresh of all-electric Tesla cars is as good at gaming as Sony PlayStation 5. This is because the carmaker has reportedly opted for one of the latest AMD GPUs. The Graphics Processing Unit that powers the infotainment and driver assistance console can play top-end games.

Tesla Model S|X 2021 packs AMD Navi 23 RDNA 2 GPU:

Tesla has announced its updated Model S. The company has also updated the Model X. One of the highlights of the powerful all-electric vehicles is the larger-than-tablet infotainment system.

Apparently, the touchscreen system within the Tesla Model S|X gets 10 TFLOPs of horsepower. This is similar to the latest Sony PlayStation 5. Evidence suggests Tesla has chosen AMD’s RDNA 2 based Navi 23 GPU, which also powers the Sony PS5.

Details of the Model S and Model X refresh’s in-car gaming system/infotainment system GPU leaked last year. According to a leaked block diagram of Tesla Model S|X, the infotainment system would have AMD Navi 23 GPU.

The powerful, high-end graphics processing core inside the new Tesla cars would have 8 GB of VRAM. It appears the GPU works with Samsung GDDR6 memory chips (K4ZAF325XM). The memory is rated at 14 Gbps, and is attached to a 128-bit memory bus.

This means the dedicated memory modules for the GPU will have a maximum bandwidth of 224 GB/s. Incidentally, these figures are identical to the Microsoft Xbox Series S|X.

Both the Sony PlayStation 5 and the Microsoft Xbox Series X have similar processing power as that housed within the Tesla Model S and Model X refresh. Tesla claims it packs 10 Teraflops of processing power. Simple math indicates the company would have to need 32 Compute Units of Navi 23 GPU (2048 Stream Processors) that are clocked to at least 2.44 GHz.

Tesla Model S|X 2021 refresh infotainment system features:

With an AMD Navi 23 GPU for its onboard infotainment system, the Tesla Model S|X cars are at par with the latest high-end gaming consoles. If permitted, these consoles can play the latest Cyberpunk 2077. Of course, the game has to work without its numerous glitches.

Tesla Motors claims its infotainment system will be based on the Tesla Gaming Arcade platform. The system’s highlight is the main 17″ Cinematic Display that features a resolution of 2200 x 1300 pixels. There’s a smaller secondary screen for the second-row passengers.

The infotainment system comes with wireless controller compatibility and lets you game from any seat. The leaked diagram also shows that the system offers DisplayPort and HDMI 1.4 connections along with PCIe Gen4 x8 (8Gb/s). Needless to add, these ports would connect to the onboard monitors and a board-to-board (B2B) connector.
